A transformer is a device used to transmit power between two AC circuits. It applies to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. In all transformers except for autotransformers, electricity is transmitted from one circuit to another through a common magnetic field generated.

When AC power is applied to the input side of a transformer, it generates a magnetic field. Due to the sinusoidal nature of AC power sources, the magnetic field generated will undergo changes. When the changing magnetic field intersects with the coil on the output side of the transformer, EMF will be induced in it.
